Guilty Pleasures in Food, Part 1

Is it really a vacation unless you let loose a little with what you are eating?  Come on, what is vacation without a little extra fat, salt and sugar in your diet?  You  might as well stay home, have a bowl of All-Bran and go to work.

When I was going through the rental car checkout, the gal that was helping me asked where we were staying.  I told her that we were staying in Kailua.  She told me that I needed to eat at Boots and Kimo’s.  She said that they made the best banana pancakes with macademia nut sauce.  I told her that that sounded good and promptly put it out of my mind.  I’m tired, its dark and I want some sleep.

The next morning feeling pretty good, but I wanted a cup of coffee to get things moving.  My nephews said that they would like a cup as well.  So, the three of us pile into the car in search of freshly brewed java.  Scooter fired up the iPhone and found a place near by.  As we were coming up on the cafe, I noticed at rather long line at a place that I can only describe as a hole-in-the-wall.  Hmmm, long line, locals, hole-in-the-wall decore.  This can mean only one thing.  Good food.  I’ll remember the location even if I can see the name.

Two days later, the question of breakfast presents itself again (funny how that happens).  I talk my wife and girls into trying the place I saw on Sunday.  Turns out that that place is called Boots and Kimo’s.  It is a little cafe dinner with about a dozen booths and a four seat counter.  That explains the line.

I ordered the banana pancakes with the macadamia nut sauce.  My wife ordered the eggs benedict, with the girls ordering either french toast or pancakes with macadamia nut sauce.  Add on a side or two of fried spam you you have been dropped into an island of tastebud overload with the maximum amount of sugar, salt and fat that should be allowed in a breakfast meal.

Was it any good?  Well, let’s put it this way.  The next day I rounded up my family along with my youngest sister’s family and we all headed to Boots and Kimo’s.  That was twelve of us.

On Saturday or Sunday mornings be prepared for a line.  A long line.  Weekday mornings is easier to get a table.  Boots and Kimo’s is located at 131 Hekili St, Kailua HI 96734.  You might want to call first to see if they have finally moved into their new location down the street. 808-263-7929
